I’ve never been on a Tinder date. When I tell people this, this get all judgey, like I’m the one doing something wrong. Janelle James. Being a Black girl is awesome, but society’s ignorance consistently tried to bring us down. And it certainly doesn’t get easier when you’re a Black girl dating a white guy. Interracial dating is technically no longer taboo, but considering the way Black girls are judged for dating white guys, you’d think otherwise — and it comes at us from all sides, from being made to feel guilty for dating outside of your race to being told you’re not good enough to date a white person.

However, since moving to New York two and a half years ago, the men I attract mostly happen to be white. I suspect it has to do with the neighborhood I live in, the dating apps I use, and the industry I work in. These men are typically very socially aware and would probably describe themselves as liberal, feminist, and woke. While dating outside my race has opened my eyes to different cultures and new experiences, it has also come with a lot of fetishizing and expectations of my character.
When dating a swirl man, I have to ask myself, has he dated outside his race before? Has he dated a Black woman before? Does he only date Black women? Of course these are generalizations and there are always exceptions. During slavery, as I’m sure you’re well aware, the occurence of white slaveowners raping their black female slaves and biracial daughters was extremely common. I think there grew such a hatred of white men, especially representing slavery and the whole power structure, in general, that it became taboo for black women and white men to be involved.
